Payment Monkey Background

I began my working life in a bank, or more accurately, a Finance Company that became a bank during the time I was working there. There were six of us in the Frenchgate branch of HFC Trust and Savings, which later became HFC Bank. A manager, a couple of clerk typists and three Branch Assistants / Assistant Managers. The three of us rotated tasks, so we would be on lending, which was all about taking Sales Finance applications over the phone, assessing and approving loans in person, taking loan repayments at the front desk and engaging in collection activities involving phone calls and door knocking.

I have a few stories to tell, but my 18 months in branch put me in direct face to face contact with the users of our services, and I quickly learned that gathering information without the necessary attention to detail would all too often mean knocking on doors later.

I was, after 18 months, allowed to take up a position at Head Office in Bracknell as a Systems Analyst. It was here that I was introduced to my first ATM!

The Early Years

Prior to my first proper job, I spent several summer vacations – school holidays and summer breaks from university – working on a strawberry farm. The farm was behind my parents’ house and extended to around 40 acres, 30 acres of strawberries and 10 acres of raspberries. It was also the local base for similar farms across Yorkshire and into Lancashire; as far as I was aware, I was part of the largest strawberry consortium in Europe, which was operated out of Scunthorpe. I know of no bigger strawberry consortia across Europe, so I guess it must be correct.

I also spent one summer working in the psychiatric hospital in Balby, just outside Doncaster and near to where I was born. I was a Nursing Assistant, helping to look after people who could nearly look after themselves, and I also helped with the Elderly Severely Mentally Ill, who could not. I learned a lot!
